Great Sleep at Sea

A cruise vacation promises a break from daily life, and many passengers take advantage of the opportunity to rest, relax, and catch up on sleep. Breathing sea air, dining on delicious food, exploring ports, and doing some laps in the pool or on the Promenade Deck can all contribute to a good sleep – but, the most important contributor may be the comfort of the bed in your cabin.

Of course, what’s comfortable is a little different for everyone, but the quality of the mattress usually plays a role. Cruise lines, like high-end hotels, install mattresses they hope will be pleasing to most of their guests. And, you may be absolutely delighted with the bed in your cabin, just as it is. But if you’re not, there may be ways to adjust.

First – even before you make your cruise reservation – ask your professional travel advisor about cruise lines with special bedding programs. For example, Princess Cruises has its own Princess Luxury Beds. They have individually wrapped coils, which help minimize motion when you or your sleep partner turn over in the night, along with a two-inch-thick pillow top.

Oceania Cruises also has custom-designed mattresses: the Prestige Tranquility mattress has 400 springs covered by memory foam, with a quilted pillowtop that contains chamomile-infused fiber. The cruise line also offers 1,000-count bed linens and a variety of pillows, from fluffy to firm.

You can also consider reserving a suite, because they often come with upgraded beds and bedding. For example, suites on Holland America Line’s ships feature the Mariner’s Dream bed, which is a Euro-top mattress with an extra layer of padding sewn under the mattress cover.

If you think a newer mattress would provide a more comfortable sleep for you, ask your professional travel advisor about sailing on a newer ship or a newly refurbished ship.

And, if you use a sleep mask and earplugs at home, bring them along with you to maintain a familiar sleep environment. You’ll want to be well-rested each day as you explore your cruise destination and enjoy the ship.

Once on board, if your bed isn’t comfortable, ask your cabin steward to make some adjustments. Many ships carry soft, “egg crate” mattress toppers, and a different type of pillow, or just an extra pillow or blanket, can make a difference. Be sure to make these requests on the first day of your cruise, just in case supplies are limited.
