Catch the World Cup at Sea

The World Cup, soccer’s premiere quadrennial championship, will take the world stage June 11 to July 19. The tournament will be bigger than ever, with 48 teams, three host nations (the U.S., Canada and Mexico), 16 host cities, and 104 matches. And because no one wants to choose between cruising and World Cup viewing, several cruise lines have already announced that their ships will broadcast some or all matches.

The specifics of onboard World Cup viewing – such as which matches will be broadcast and where passengers can watch – vary by cruise line, and possibly between ships in the same fleet. Time zone changes and scheduled port calls may affect viewing schedules, too. So, ask Anita, your professional travel advisor, to help you check World Cup broadcast details for a cruise you’ve already reserved or are considering.

Here’s what we know about cruise lines that have promised to show World Cup matches on board; others may join this list before the tournament begins.

Celebrity Cruises will show World Cup matches in onboard gathering spots, including big-screen venues. Major matches will have priority and will be selected in line with the ship’s itinerary and passenger interest.

Cunard Line will show all World Cup matches in venues like the Golden Lion Pub. This England-based line supports the home team, so matches featuring England or Scotland may be shown in larger venues, like the poolside Pavilion.

Holland America promises to broadcast all matches on stateroom television; some may also be shown in the World Stage Theater (available on some ships) or on the Lido Deck.

Princess Cruises will also show all matches: passengers can watch on their stateroom televisions, with select matches shown on the line’s signature Lido Deck big screens.

Royal Caribbean has confirmed that World Cup matches will be broadcast on its ships. Viewing venues may include the line’s popular sports bars, lounges and large-screen venues.

Seabourn’s luxurious ocean-going ships will have live World Cup coverage. Passengers can watch in their suites or join their shipmates in onboard gathering spaces.

If you cruise during the World Cup, bring a jersey or other piece of kit to show support for your favorite side. Depending on where you sail, you may be able to catch matches at onshore pubs and clubs, too. As always, be respectful of others’ love for their teams, and all the soccer fans at sea will have a wonderful time.
