Safety On Shore
Cruise vacations are for relaxation, and perhaps a bit of letting loose, amid the comfort and convenience of a cruise ship. Cruise vacations are also for exploring parts of the world that are new to you, and while you’re on shore, a few common-sense safety tips will help ensure a fun and memorable vacation.
These tips
are not meant to alarm you; touring on shore may be no riskier than taking a
walk in your neighborhood, and the shore excursions offered by your cruise line are led by experienced drivers and guides. Still, while in vacation mode, anyone can be
a little more vulnerable to pickpockets and other petty thieves, so here are
some things to keep in mind.
Leave your
wallet, and most of its contents, in your cabin safe. Go ashore with just one or two credit
cards and a small amount of cash, stored in a front pocket. Don’t take your
passport off the ship unless you absolutely have to; take a photocopy of your
passport’s identification page instead.
No bling
in port. It’s usually
best to leave expensive jewelry and designer clothes at home, but if you do
bring some, wear them only on the ship. Wearing them on shore will make you
more visible as a tourist.
This also
applies to items like group t-shirts and patriotic attire. A shirt that
declares you’re part of a family reunion or a bachelor/bachelorette party can
make you more visible, as does clothing adorned with American flags or other
U.S. symbols. Wearing simpler, plainer clothes and little or no jewelry will
help you blend in while on land.
Crossbody
bags are best. If you
bring a bag, opt for one with a crossbody strap. They are harder for thieves to
grab than a shoulder bag or a belt bag. A crossbody bag is also better than a
backpack, which can be slit open and emptied before you even notice anything.
Avoid
distractions. Pickpockets
often work in teams – one tries to distract you so the other can take your
belongings. It’s difficult to ignore someone who seems to be asking for help,
crying, or giving you something, but it can be the safer choice.
Don’t get
too tipsy. It’s fun
to sample local drinks, but stay sober while in port. Alcohol can impair
judgement and make you a more attractive target.
