Sail the Great Lakes

There’s a fantastic option for close-to-home cruising along the U.S.-Canadian border: the Great Lakes, five massive lakes that touch eight states and one province. The lakes are so wide and deep they would be classified as inland seas if they were filled with saltwater – instead, they are the world’s largest group of freshwater lakes. You’ll find natural beauty, fascinating history and sparkling cities along their shores.

Cruise lines that sail lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Superior include Viking, Ponant, and American Cruise Lines. They use smaller ships for this summer cruise region, because they need to fit through the narrow locks and canals that connect some of the lakes. So while you’ll sail in great style and comfort, don’t expect waterparks, dozens of dining options or big performance spaces on board.

A variety of Great Lakes itineraries are available; as you explore them, consider length, the number of lakes and ports visited, and the number of “lake days” with no port calls. Here are some of the popular ports to visit:

Toronto, Ontario: The charming, diverse neighborhoods are fun to explore, as is the CN Tower, one of the world’s tallest and an icon of the Toronto skyline.

Niagara Falls, Ontario: Ships bypass the mighty falls by sailing through the Welland Canal, but a shore excursion can take you to see the spectacle (and catch some of the spray).

Detroit, Michigan: This resurgent city is a treasure of art deco and postmodern urban architecture; see it on a walking tour, or visit the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Mackinac Island, Michigan: No cars are allowed on the island, so relax in a horse-drawn carriage or take a bike ride to discover its scenic beauty and Victorian architecture.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Once dominated by massive breweries, the city now has delightful craft breweries to tour, along with the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Chicago, Illinois: Chicago’s cultural riches include world-class museums, colorful neighborhoods and top-rated restaurants serving world cuisines. Admire the city’s impressive skyline from a tour boat, or catch the Cubs at historic Wrigley Field.

There are other Great Lakes ports you might call on, including Algoma on Wisconsin’s beautiful Door Peninsula; Manitoulin Island, Ontario, in scenic Georgian Bay; or Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, where Lake Huron connects with Lake Superior via the Soo Locks.
