Holland America Begins Ship Revitalization

Holland America Line, which has been sailing the world for more than 150 years, has embarked on a bow-to-stern revitalization of six of its popular ships. The multiyear project, named “Holland America Evolution,” is the biggest ship enhancement in the line’s history. It will renovate and update ships in the Vista Class (Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam) and Signature Class (Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam). The project will give all six ships new spaces and features, including some that have already proven popular on Holland America’s Pinnacle Class ships.

The project will equip each ship with new cabin styles and categories. For example, the Oosterdam will emerge with 76 additional cabins, including 30 specifically designed for solo travelers. In addition to private balconies, these cabins will have dedicated workspaces and other amenities popular with solo travelers.

The renovation will also enhance Oosterdam’s suite accommodations, adding new Vista Suites with comfortable sitting areas. There will also be two brand-new, 900-square-foot Bridgeview Suites, each boasting 180-degree ocean views – similar to what the captain and crew can see from the ship’s bridge. The existing Pinnacle Suites will also be expanded; at 1,500 square feet each, they will be the largest suites ever offered in the Vista Class.

The Oosterdam’s renovations will also include a new Grand Dutch Café, already a favorite on Holland America’s Pinnacle Class ships. A reflection of the cruise line’s Dutch heritage, the café is an all-day spot for gathering, relaxing, and enjoying drinks and light bites in European café style. This informal spot will serve tea and specialty coffees, European beers and liquors, and delicious snacks like Dutch mini pancakes.

Holland America is committed to minimizing waste during the renovations and will upcycle and reuse materials whenever possible. The line is also working to improve the energy efficiency of the ships through improved power management systems that will reduce energy demands.

Holland America is now taking post-revitalization reservations for the first two ships scheduled to go through Holland America Evolution: the Oosterdam and the Zuiderdam. The updated Oosterdam is scheduled to sail beginning in December 2027, with a focus on the Southern Caribbean. Zuiderdam is scheduled to explore Europe, including journeys to Iceland, when it emerges from Holland America Evolution in April 2028.
