Cruise Destinations for the Winter Holidays

Celebrating a winter holiday (or two) while on a cruise is a fantastic idea. So, where should you sail?

Many travelers looking for a winter holiday getaway choose to sail in The Bahamas or the Caribbean, and these are solid choices: they are close to home, with reliably warm, sunny weather, lovely scenery, abundant beaches, and many other attractions. However, other destinations may be right for you. Here are some to consider.

European Christmas Markets. During December, Christmas markets pop up in cities and towns along the rivers of Europe, including the Rhine and the Danube. You can browse the locally made gifts and keepsakes, sip delicious hot drinks, sample traditional holiday dishes, and admire sparkling light displays.

The Mediterranean. Winter is the quiet season for Mediterranean cruises, so your professional travel advisor may be able to find some exceptional fares. The weather will be cool and a bit rainier than in summer, but you won’t face summer-sized crowds when you visit the historic and modern attractions on shore.

The Mexican Riviera. December through February is the dry season along Mexico’s Pacific coast, with sunny days, lower humidity and refreshing breezes. In port, the shops, restaurants and plazas will be decorated with colorful lights and lots of gorgeous poinsettias, which are indigenous to Mexico.

South America. Winter in the north means summer in the southern hemisphere, so you’ll find warm weather and seasonal holiday festivities in coastal communities. And if you’re looking for adventure, it’s the right time to visit the continent’s far southern reaches, including the Chilean fjords and Tierra del Fuego.

The Galapagos Islands. The winter holidays are a fine time to take an expedition cruise in the Galapagos; the water is usually calmer than at other times of year, which brings good underwater visibility for snorkeling adventures. December through February is also mating season for some of the islands’ famous wildlife.

Australia and New Zealand. The winter holidays take place during the height of summer Down Under, so celebrations center on beach days and outdoor barbeques. Parks are adorned with twinkling lights, and people gather to sing traditional songs by candlelight.

Wherever you sail, your onboard experience will reflect the season, too. Expect seasonal decorations, special menus, and other holiday recognitions. To find out more about winter holiday destinations that are great for cruising, talk with Anita, your professional travel advisor.
