Tips for Leaving the Ship Smoothly

Every cruise must come to an end, even though we don’t like to think about it. But, a little planning can make the inevitable last morning of your cruise – disembarkation day – go smoothly. Here are some ways to prepare.

Before you sail:

Make reservations for your trip home, with careful attention to timing. Disembarkation is usually early in the morning, but may be delayed due to port procedures, customs requirements, or other situations. So, don’t schedule your departure from the port city too early. Some passengers even stay in the port city for a night and travel the following day.

Have a plan for the time after you leave the ship and before you start for home. You could take a tour of the port city, have a relaxed lunch, or do a little shopping.

The day before you disembark:

Carefully pack your bags. Then, set them outside your cabin door by the requested time – often before midnight – for pick-up by the crew. But, be sure to keep clothes and shoes to wear the next day. If you’re comfortable handling your own bags, you usually have the option to keep your luggage in your cabin and carry it off the ship with you – but you should still pack the night before.

Review your final bill. A final copy of your onboard account may be slipped under your cabin door, or be available through your cruise line’s mobile app or your cabin TV. If not, stop at the guest services desk and ask to see it. If there are any errors or discrepancies on your bill, work with guest services to resolve them before you leave the ship.

On disembarkation day:

Get up early enough to enjoy breakfast in the dining room or buffet. It’s one more delicious meal that you don’t need to cook or clean up.

Keep your keycard with you. Don’t leave it behind in your cabin, as you may need to have it scanned as you leave the ship.

Be ready to go at your scheduled disembarkation time. The ship will welcome a new group of passengers that very afternoon, so the crew has a lot to do and will appreciate you leaving your cabin and the ship when your departure group is called.

Claim your bags. If the crew picked up your luggage the night before, you’ll find it inside the cruise terminal.
