New Feature for Silversea’s Antarctic Cruises

Silversea Cruises is preparing something new for its guests who journey to the Antarctic. The cruise line is putting finishing touches on The Cormorant at 55 South, soon to be the world’s southernmost hotel. Located at the 55 south parallel in Puerto Williams, Chile, the Cormorant will be exclusively for guests on Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruises.

Here’s a little background on how the hotel came to be. A few years ago, Silversea began to offer Antarctic cruises that depart from Puerto Williams not by ship, but by chartered plane. Instead of spending two days sailing across the Drake Passage, guests take a two-hour flight from Puerto Williams to King George Island, a research station just 75 miles off the Antarctic coast. Once on the island, guests board their Silversea expedition cruise ship, then sail on to the wonders of the Antarctic continent.

The Cormorant at 55 South, scheduled to open in January 2026, will give Silversea’s guests a comfortable place to prepare for their Antarctic experiences. In addition to style and comfort, the 150-room hotel is designed to highlight and reflect the natural beauty of its remote, Patagonian setting. Backed by trees and snow-capped mountains, the hotel overlooks the storied Beagle Channel.

Puerto Williams is located in the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, and while at The Cormorant, guests may choose to enjoy guided excursions into the pristine environment. These include birdwatching treks in search of an array of winged species, including the cormorants that give the hotel its name. Guests can also hike in the subpolar forest, where they might see guanacos (relatives of the llama), Patagonian foxes and muskrats. Or, they can paddle kayaks along the Beagle Channel and its scenic inlets, where dolphins, whales and seals are known to swim.

Guests can also prepare for their Antarctic adventure by trying on the cold weather gear that Silversea provides. Parkas, waterproof pants and boots will be waiting for guests in their hotel rooms. If a try-on reveals that different sizes are required, it can all be worked out before departing the hotel.

Flying guests over the Drake Passage enables Silversea to offer shorter-than-average Antarctic itineraries, which are as brief as six adventure-filled days. That can be attractive to cruise passengers who have only limited time away from home or work.
