Playing Cruise Ship Games

Cruising is a way to explore ports around the world, but cruises also include time to relax and play on the ship. There are lots of options: most ships have a selection of board games, and many are equipped with popular gaming systems, colorful arcades, and casinos for adults (the last two require some money to play; you may want to set a budget for yourself!).

But here, we’re looking at cruise ship games that get the crowd around the pool or in the show lounge, clapping and cheering. Participating can be a terrific way to have fun with your companions and to get to know some fellow passengers.

Scavenger hunts will have you roaming the decks looking for miscellaneous yet specific objects, like a hat with a sports team logo, a drink umbrella, or a chip from the casino. You might be asked to take a picture of each object, or to physically bring them to a home base. Either way, it’s fun to work as a team to find the items. Some adult-only versions get a bit risqué, which adds to the general hilarity.

Pool deck games take advantage of a swimsuit’s tendency to expose parts of our bodies that are seldom on display. Games may include competitions to select the hairiest chest, skinniest legs or biggest feet on board; the crowd response determines the winners. The pool is also the place for the time-honored belly flop contest, where making a big splash is a good thing.

Couples’ contests focus on finding out how in sync romantic couples really are. Contestants often include a new couple, one that’s been together for many years, and another that’s somewhere in between. The lighthearted questions, such as “How would you rate your first kiss?” or “What animal does your partner remind you of?” are intended to produce plenty of laughs.

Trivia games often have themes, like music, sports or even the ship’s itinerary. Joining a trivia team is a great way to meet fellow passengers, but make sure you fit with the team vibe – some players take trivia very seriously and will expect you to be serious too, while others won’t mind missing most of the answers.

Your ship may also offer card or shuffleboard tournaments, sports-based contests, talent competitions, or a mystery to solve. To find out more about cruise ship games you’ll want to participate in, talk with Anita, your professional travel advisor.
